Are the Olympic Games a net-positive or net-negative for the LGBTQ community?
On the one hand, no sports event regularly features more out LGBTQ athletes, elevating their profiles and building exposure and acceptance of the community. In 2016 there were at least 56 out athletes in Rio, and the next Summer Olympics will have more than 100.
On the other hand, the Olympic Games are often a burden to the residents of host cities, with people displaced, taxes raised and other issues.
On this week’s episode of the Five Rings To Rule Them All podcast, two members of the group NOlympics L.A. join me to talk about all of this and more. NOlympics aims to end the Olympic Games due to alleged human-rights violations.
Joining me are Gia Lappe and Gigi Droesch, who Los Angeles residents who have gotten involved focusing on canceling the 2028 Summer Olympics set to be hosted in the City of Angels. We talk specifically about their claim that the Olympic Games are “dangerous” for the LGBTQ community.
